Business funding in Canada

Canadian corporate credit is concentrated among the chartered banks, with a substantial and growing asset-based lending and private credit market alongside. Security is straightforward to perfect through provincial PPSA registration, which makes receivables and equipment lending efficient.

How Canadian funders assess a request

Notice-to-reader or review-engagement financials are usually acceptable below mid-market size, though audited statements widen the lender pool. Lenders test debt service coverage, then look at the quality of the borrowing base.

Existing PPSA registrations are checked at the outset. Where a bank holds a general security agreement, a second lender will require a priority or intercreditor agreement, and negotiating that is often the critical path.

Where the market is strongest

Asset-based lending is well developed for manufacturers, distributors and resource-sector suppliers. Equipment finance is competitive and fast. Export transactions can be supported by EDC insurance, which improves both quantum and price.

Private credit funds serve the mid-market between bank appetite and equity, typically from CAD 5m upwards.

Timing and process

Equipment and receivables facilities usually complete in two to four weeks. ABL and structured bank facilities require field examinations and appraisals, taking six to ten weeks.

Questions

Are facilities available in USD?

Yes. USD facilities are common for exporters to the United States, and many lenders will fund a dual-currency borrowing base.

Is a field examination always required?

For ABL, effectively yes. It verifies the receivables and inventory that set your borrowing base, and is repeated periodically.

Describe your requirement once and we structure it, then approach providers active in Canada whose criteria match. There are no upfront fees — all charges are due only once funding is in place.
