Business funding in Italy

Italian corporate lending remains bank-led, with a dense network of national, regional and cooperative banks serving a manufacturing economy of family-owned mid-market companies. Non-bank credit funds and receivables platforms have grown quickly and now fill the gaps banks leave, particularly for exporters and companies carrying long payment terms.

Receivables discounting (anticipo fatture) is the default working capital tool

State guarantee schemes materially improve pricing for SMEs

Export-heavy manufacturers are well served by SACE-supported structures

How Italian funders assess a request

Banks lean heavily on Centrale dei Rischi data from the Bank of Italy, which shows your aggregate exposure and payment behaviour across the whole banking system. A clean record there matters more than a polished business plan.

Bilanci filed at the Registro delle Imprese, plus the last twelve months of bank movements and an aged debtor listing, form the core pack. Long customer payment terms are normal and understood, but they must be evidenced rather than described.

Where the market is strongest

Invoice discounting, confirming and supply-chain programmes are competitive and quick. Asset finance (leasing) for machinery is deep, reflecting the industrial base in Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna.

Export contracts can access SACE-supported structures, and many SME facilities benefit from the Fondo di Garanzia, which reduces the bank's capital cost and therefore your margin.

Timing and process

Receivables and leasing facilities generally complete in two to four weeks. Structured or guaranteed bank lending typically takes six to ten weeks because of scheme documentation and notarial requirements.

Questions

Do I need an Italian bank relationship?

It helps but is not essential. Independent financiers and credit funds will lend to Italian companies without an existing domestic banking relationship.

How important is the Centrale dei Rischi record?

Very. Late payments or overdrawn positions reported there will be seen by every bank you approach, so address them before applying.

Describe your requirement once and we structure it, then approach providers active in Italy whose criteria match. There are no upfront fees — all charges are due only once funding is in place.
